The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC)

Download / Print :    PDF

Description:

A composite self-report questionnaire widely used since the 1980s because of its simplicity. It evaluates the impact of osteoartiritis (OA) of the hip and knee on function and pain [1], [2].

The patient is asked to reply to questions in 3 fields (pain, function and stiffness) by giving a score from 0 to 4 on a visual analogue scale.

The total score is the sum of the scores selected by the patient.

The higher the score, the greater the impact of hip and/or knee OA on function.

Inclusion criteria (major clinical categories): Non-traumatic osteoarthritis - Rhumatoid arthritis / Osteoarthritis - Trauma-related osteoarthritis - Joint replacement.

Exclusion criteria (should not be used for): Conditions unrelated to arthritis.

Care should be taken when using the scale for patients with: High body mass index.
